FAQs: Developmental Screening

While it's important not to stigmatize autism, it is also important to recognize that those affected by the condition will typically struggle in certain social situations, in school, and with their behavior. The best way to help is through intervention and treatment, and a developmental screening provided by our Leesville and Many, LA, pediatrician is a way for your child to get the help they need. You can learn more about the benefits of a developmental screening by reaching out to Dr. Robert Crowe of The Pediatric Center.

What Is ASD?

Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, is a behavioral disorder that can impact your child's quality of life and ability to succeed. The condition cannot be cured but with early enough treatment many of the symptoms, it can be successfully managed, along with other kinds of personalized support.

What Does a Developmental Screening Involve?

Although research in autism and other developmental disorders continues to grow every year there is as yet no medical procedure that can definitively diagnose it. Instead, your child's doctor examines their developmental history and their behavior to come to a conclusion. Diagnosis will not always look the same between patients, and neither will the levels of support they require.

At What Age Is It Recommended?

The first screening is typically done as soon as possible, the condition can sometimes be detected in children around 18 months old, and sometimes younger. But it's typically around the age of 2 that a more reliable diagnosis can be established. But it's not too late, sometimes children do not receive a final diagnosis until they are much older.
